Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway was Friday, October 25, 2024 elected the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
Madam Botchwey becomes the second African to hold the position after Chief Emeka Anyaoku of Nigeria.
She defeated two other candidates from the Africa Region, namely Mamadou Tangara of The Gambia and Joshua Setipa of Lesotho.
The election climaxed the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, the capital of the Pacific Island nation of Samoa, which ends on Saturday.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey will take over from the outgoing Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland Baroness Scotland of the United Kingdom.
