An Accra District Court has sentenced a 21-year-old Ghanaian football fan, Mohammed Huzeinu, to prison custody for invading a pitch during the country’s FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The convict was given the 100-day jail sentence for invading the Accra Sports Stadium during Ghana’s match against Chad on Friday, March 21, 2022.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), which is the complainant, noted that Huzeinu’s actions disrupted the game.

It indicated that the offense has potential financial consequences for the GFA, as the association is likely to be fined whenever such incidents occur.

In a statement reacting to the development, the GFA condemned the practice of invading pitches during matches and expressed that the sentence would serve as a caution to football enthusiasts in the future.

“Pitch invasions are considered a serious breach of security and disrupt the smooth running of games. The sentencing serves as a strong warning to fans to respect stadium regulations and maintain order during matches,” says the GFA.

The FA further urged fans to refrain from such actions, emphasizing the importance of discipline and adherence to matchday protocols to avoid fines and maintain Ghana’s reputation in international football.
