The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed profound dismay regarding the arrest and detention of two TikTokers on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, alongside the apprehension of Sir-Obama Pokuase, a noted social media activist.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, and signed by Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organizer, the NPP Youth Wing articulated their shock at the apparent misuse of resources by the Ghana Police Service to detain young citizens who, in a moment of exuberance, made comments deemed unsuitable.
These social media activists, like all Ghanaians, recognise the grief that has enveloped the nation.
The statement emphasised that these individuals possess no actionable capacity to inflict harm nor do they harbour any intent to do so; their comments, however unsavoury, are merely opinions to which they are entitled.
“We need not remind the Ghana Police that freedom of speech is guaranteed in the country for all citizens and that the partisan approach being adopted by the current security system of the state is very worrisome.
“The current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), who served as Deputy IGP under the previous NPP administration, should acknowledge that there exists a plethora of equally, if not more, reckless comments and videos from NDC activists that his outfit tolerated.
“Why the intolerance today? Why is the malicious treatment of all individuals who identify with the NPP the new norm for the security apparatus? Is it a deliberate attempt to intimidate us?”
The NPP Youth Wing urged the Ghana Police Service to uphold their motto, “Service with Integrity,” and questioned, “Where is the integrity they speak about?”
The statement went on to highlight an incident on July 11, during which a violent attack was perpetrated against former Minister of State and MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, Chris Lloyd, and other party members by known assailants during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun.
It emphatically asserted that the Ghana Police have woefully failed to apprehend and prosecute these individuals, who are affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while harmless youth are arrested for mere social media discussions.
This, they declared, is shamelessly biased and unequivocally partisan.
In conclusion, the statement condemned these arrests, asserting that they contravene the principles of democracy. The NPP Youth Wing demands the unconditional and immediate release of Fante Comedy, AY, and Sir-Obama Pokuase.
