The Minority Caucus in Parliament has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary held on January 31, 2026.
The Caucus described the victory as “decisive” for the flagbearer-elect, which “represents a clear mandate from NPP delegates across all 276 constituencies, both at home and in the diaspora” to lead the party.
In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, it stated Dr. Bawumia’s victory reflects the overwhelming confidence NPP delegates have placed in his leadership and vision for Ghana’s future.
It added that the process demonstrated the party’s internal democratic values.
“The robust nature of this democratic exercise reflects the NPP’s enduring commitment to internal democracy and the principle that every voice matters equally within our political tradition.”
The Caucus called for unity after the primaries, noting that the conclusion of this contest marks the beginning of a critical phase of reconciliation and unity, and urged party members to rally behind Dr. Bawumia’s leadership.
Emphasising unity, it referred to past electoral experiences, especially the 2024 exercise, describing it as “painful” and disclosing that the defeat taught the NPP an invaluable lesson, that unity is not merely a political slogan but their fundamental source of strength.
The Minority Caucus pledged its backing for the flagbearer-elect as preparations begin toward the 2028 general elections.
