Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has proudly joined the Ghana-Zambia Friday “Fugu Frenzy,” celebrating Ghanaian fashion on the global stage.
In a vibrant display of cultural heritage, Mr. Smith wore the traditional fugu (batakari) smock, affirming Ghana’s unique style and positioning the garment as a symbol of African elegance.
The ambassador’s showcase comes after President Mahama’s fugu smock was mistakenly referred to as a “blouse” by Zambian netizens, inadvertently catapulting Ghana’s traditional attire into the international spotlight.

Fashion experts see the ambassador’s showcase as a strategic move to boost the fugu’s export potential, inspiring local artisans and designers to craft modern interpretations of the traditional smock for international markets.
The viral “fugu frenzy” is expected to spark economic interest in Ghanaian textiles, reinforcing the country’s cultural footprint worldwide.
