The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has cut the sod for the construction of the Asuokow Bridge in Asuokow, located in the Upper West Akim Municipality.
The sod-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, following residents’ calls for President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill a promise made in 2025 to construct a pedestrian bridge, after a viral social media video.

This project, when completed, will bring relief to residents of Asuokow and neighboring communities, who currently cross the River Ayensu on a risky wooden plank.
In a statement, the minister announced that the project is a collaborative effort with the Department of Feeder Roads.
“I wish to inform the public that a pedestrian bridge over the River Ayensu at Asuokow was officially handed over for construction to provide a safe and reliable crossing for residents, particularly schoolchildren who previously risked their lives crossing the river,” Madam Awatey said.
She praised the government’s swift intervention, noting it would offer a lasting solution and significantly improve accessibility and mobility within the community.
The minister assured the public of government support in coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure the project’s timely completion.
“Government will continue to work diligently with all stakeholders to ensure the project progresses smoothly and is completed to the highest standard,” she stated.
