Black Stars’ assistant coach, John Paintsil, has expressed confidence that Ghana has the capability of reaching the semifinals or even the final of the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
He cited the team’s experience on the world stage as the basis for his argument.
The tournament, set to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest stage.
Ghana, out of its four FIFA World Cup appearances (2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022), reached the Round of 16 in Germany 2006 and the Quarterfinals in South Africa 2010.
Speaking to 3Sports, the former Black Stars defender emphasised his position and drew inspiration from the team’s previous appearances at the mundial.
“We have enough experience to be in the semi-finals or final of the 2026 World Cup,” he said without mincing words.
According to him, the Black Stars are no strangers to competing at the highest level.
“When it comes to the World Cup, Ghana is now experienced,” he added.
Mr. Paintsil hopes that the players representing the nation will be fit for the task ahead.
“I want all our players to be fit, so they’ll be ready for the call-up,” he said.
Ghana will open its campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage with a match against Croatia on June 27.
As part of their preparations, the Black Stars will regroup in March for international friendlies against Austria and Germany, before taking on Mexico ahead of the tournament.
