An Indian national, Shubham Sharma, has been convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for possessing counterfeit Ghana cedi notes and US dollars.
The Circuit Court, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, convicted him on his own plea of guilty but deferred sentencing until today.
In delivering judgment, the trial judge noted that the offence constitutes a second-degree felony, which carries a maximum sentence of 25 years.
However, he emphasized that the punishment was intended to deter others from attempting to introduce counterfeit currency into Ghana’s financial system.
Sharma was sentenced to four years on count one and five years on count two, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The complainant, Sushil Sharma, is a businessman residing at the North Ridge George Town Court Apartments and the Chief Executive Officer of Sogy Chem Ghana Limited, an air freshener manufacturing company.
