Member of Parliament (MP) for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has stated that comments made by President John Dramani Mahama on the LGBTQ bill indicate that the legislation is not a priority for his administration.
Speaking on ‘Angel TV’ on Thursday, April 9, 2026, he explained that the President has already assented to five different laws passed by Parliament, and could have included the LGBTQ bill among them if he considered it important.
“If President Mahama wants to sign this law and it is his priority, he would have been happy to add it,” he said.
According to him, the bill had already been passed in Parliament by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and only requires the support of two-thirds of the House to maintain it and reintroduce it.
Mr. Acquah emphasized that while the President is responsible for shaping and implementing policies, those policies should reflect the priorities of the people.
“The country is for us all; the President cannot determine our priority. The President said this is not our priority; he is not the one to tell us our priority,” he stated.
He added that the LGBTQ issue is of deep concern to many Ghanaians, claiming that surveys indicate more than 90 percent of citizens want the bill to be passed.
