Former coach of the ‘Three Lions’ of England, Steve McClaren, has become the latest candidate to emerge for the vacant Black Stars coaching role after reportedly expressing interest.
He is believed to have opened talks with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over a potential offer for the enviable position.
According to sources, discussions began after McClaren reached out to GFA representatives to register his interest.
The tactician, who managed the English national team between 2006 and 2007, is hoping to secure the Black Stars job following his departure from the Jamaica national team after failing to qualify them for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
McClaren now joins a tall list of coaches in contention to replace Otto Addo, who was dismissed for poor performance.
The list includes Hervé Renard, Walid Regragui, Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, Fernando Santos, and Slaven Bilić.
Barring any last-minute changes, Carlos Queiroz is expected to be handed the job, owing to his profile and coaching experience – spanning Real Madrid, Colombia, Qatar, Iran Egypt, South Africa, and a stint as Manchester United assistant, which makes him the leading candidate.
Steve McClaren has previously managed clubs such as FC Twente, Nottingham Forest, QPR, VfL Wolfsburg, and Newcastle United, among others.
The formal announcement of the new coach is expected to be made in the coming weeks, as revealed by Sports Minister Kofi Adams.
