President John Dramani Mahama has urged Christians entrusted with public office to uphold integrity, humility and respect for citizens, saying their faith must be reflected in how they serve the people.
Speaking at the opening of the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship at the Accra International Conference Centre, President Mahama said faith should strengthen public officials’ commitment to honesty, fairness and responsible leadership.
He noted that public office comes with a particular responsibility to serve the people conscientiously, especially those whose voices are least likely to reach the centre of power.
“Our faith should deepen our humility. It must strengthen our respect for our citizens. It must imbue us with honesty and integrity,” he said.
President Mahama also stressed that his responsibility as President required him to serve every Ghanaian equally, irrespective of religious beliefs.
He explained that his Christian faith should not prevent him from ensuring fairness towards Muslims, adherents of traditional religions and citizens who profess no faith.
“As President, I have a sworn duty to serve every Ghanaian: Christians of every denomination, Muslims, adherents of traditional religion, and even our citizens who profess no faith,” he stated.
He acknowledged that some Christian leaders had questioned his faith because of his insistence on taking actions that were fair to people of different religious backgrounds.
The President, however, maintained that Ghana’s religious diversity was a valuable national asset that must be protected through mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
He further urged churches to promote honesty, compassion, responsible citizenship and peace while maintaining the moral independence to speak against injustice and suffering.
President Mahama said the impact of faith should extend beyond church services into workplaces and communities, where people could experience it through acts of kindness, fairness and integrity.
The 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship is being held in Ghana under the theme, “Commissioned, One Mandate, Every Nation,” with more than 10,000 participants expected to take part in the global gathering.
The congress brings together church leaders, ministers and delegates from different countries to strengthen fellowship and renew their commitment to Christian service.
