The Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) has said their 2.59% increment in transport fares is taking effect on Monday, October 25, 2021.
The Union says that the increment has become necessary following the increase in fuel prices in the past months.
They noted that it also comes after negotiations with stakeholders.
The Industrial Relations Officer for the Accra branch of the GPRTU, Alhaji Abass Imoro, disclosed that their decision to increase the fares was considered following the rate at which fuel prices are going up recently.
“The rate at which our fuel prices are increased, I don’t want to preempt anything because there is increment soon. So, hopefully, by next week, we shall increase transport fares” Mr. Abass Imoro told 3FM in an interview monitored by Angelfmonline.com.gh.
He again said, government has been unfair to the GPRTU despite contractual assurances of stabilizing the prices of fuel that will lead to maintaining transport fares at least in the short term since they were last increased in June 2021.
He added “As I speak now, those who are not in any union have increased their fares. The floating trotro drivers have increased their fares”
He argue further that the removal of the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levies (PRSL) on petrol, diesel, and LPG for two months as approved by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), in its marginal nature does not warrant a corresponding reduction in the cost of transportation.
The National Petroleum Authority last week announced the removal of the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levies (PRSL) on petrol, diesel, and LPG for two months.
This has increased the price per gallon of diesel and petrol from about GH¢21.00 as at January this year, to about GH¢31.00 currently making a litre of petrol and diesel now sell at GH¢6.80 at the various filling stations.
