The 2024 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said that his administration will establish a minerals development bank to help small scale miners in the country.
The bank, Dr Bawumia addressing a stakeholders meeting in Upper West Akim in the Central Region said will provide the needed capital and support for small scale miners.
“I am going to set up a minerals development bank which will grant you loans to buy mining equipment to do mining in your particular concessions…,” he said.
Dr Bawumia further promised to also assist the miners with ‘mercury free gold catcher machines and common user facilities’ to aid their operations.
“Currently, our statistics show that we you are only getting only 30% of the gold from the tailings but when we come with the common user facilities, you will get up to 90% from your tailings…,” he said.
An energetic Bawumia who met the chiefs as part of his Central Regional Tour also said that his administration will also ensure that the mining sector is well regulated to ensure responsible mining.
This include ensuring that no miner mines close to water bodies.
“A Dr Bawumia government will promote responsible small scale mining. What we hate is going into water bodies, no, we will not entertain that…gold is going to help Ghana and the small scale miners as well, so I am going to make you millionaires…,” he assured.
