Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem, David Kwasi Ashiamah, has proposed a strategy to enhance food production and job creation in Ghana by utilizing National Service Personnel (NSP) in agricultural production centers.

Speaking on Angel Morning show hosted by Saddick Adams on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Ashiamah emphasized that deploying young graduates to work in food production for part of their service period could significantly improve Ghana’s agricultural sector and food security. He suggested a split approach where service personnel would spend six months in administrative roles and another six months gaining hands-on experience in farming and food processing.

“We can increase food production using National Service Personnel. The only way we can double production and employment is by pushing the youth into production centers. Right now, we are misusing them, and it is affecting the country’s productivity” he said.

Ashiamah expressed concern that many National Service personnel are placed in roles that do not fully utilize their potential, leading to inefficiencies in the system. He believes a structured approach to integrating them into agriculture will help the country maximize its human resources while equipping young people with essential skills.

If adopted, this initiative could address food security challenges, create employment opportunities, and drive economic growth. However, its success would depend on government support, infrastructure development, and proper training programs for service personnel.
