Residents of Bompata, a farming community in the Asante Akim District of the Ashanti Region, have firmly rejected any form of illegal mining popularly known as ‘galamsey ‘ within their area.
The residents vow to resist such operations in the community “until their last breath.”
Speaking to the media at a press conference, Thursday, November 6, 2025, the spokesperson for the community, Joseph Baah, stated that their stance is rooted in growing national concerns over the devastating effects of illegal mining in other parts of the country.
“Our stand is based on the serious environmental, social, and health consequences, like deformity of babies, chronic coughing, and kidney failures, that mining has caused elsewhere. We will not allow mining in our community,” he stressed.
Mr. Baah further noted that residents are deeply worried about the potential destruction of farmlands, vegetation, and forest resources, which serve as their main source of livelihood.
