The Volta Regional Commissioner at the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, has firmly rejected a proposal to rename Kotoka International Airport.
He described it as a “misplaced priority” that distracts from national development.
In a statement dated Tuesday, February 4, 2026, Dr. Apetorgbor argued that renaming airports does not improve performance, reduce costs, or attract investment.
He emphasized that airports are strategic economic assets judged by efficiency, safety, connectivity, and tourism impact, not by symbolic names.
The commissioner noted Ghana’s aviation sector needs lower operating costs and improved efficiency to position Accra as a West African hub rather than cosmetic changes like renaming facilities.
He warned that the proposal undermines public confidence and diverts focus from urgent national priorities such as economic recovery and sustainable growth.
Dr. Apetorgbor urged the Volta Caucus in Parliament and Volta-based Diaspora organizations to reject the proposal, stressing that national development is driven by performance and results, not symbolic gestures.
The statement calls for the Ghanaian public and economic senses to resist policy decisions that prioritize cosmetic measures over substantive national interests.
