President John Mahama has turned an unexpected international comment about Ghana’s traditional fugu (batakari) smock into a potential global fashion breakthrough.
During a recent state visit to Zambia, he wore the iconic striped garment, which drew online attention after being mistakenly referred to as a “blouse.”
The viral moment sparked widespread debate and highlighted Ghanaian cultural attire on the world stage.
President Mahama said the incident has positioned the fugu smock as a possible global fashion sensation, noting that the renewed interest could unlock economic benefits for local artisans and weavers.
“The attention has given our traditional fugu a spotlight that could transform it into an export product,” he explained, adding that the move would promote Ghana’s cultural heritage and boost the nation’s emerging fashion industry.
