Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has sparked lively debate on social media after suggesting that Ghana’s 2026 Independence Anniversary be declared a “Fugu edition.”
In a Facebook post made on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Manasseh directly addressed President John Dramani Mahama, proposing that this year’s national celebration highlight the traditional northern attire, fugu.
The post read: “Dear President John Dramani Mahama, can this year’s independence anniversary be declared the fugu edition?”
The comment quickly gained traction online, attracting thousands of reactions and hundreds of comments from social media users, many of whom welcomed the idea with humour and enthusiasm.
Some commenters went a step further, proposing that the day before Independence Day be officially declared a National Fugu Day.
“I think the day before the independence sef should be declared National fugu day henceforth,” one Nil-Ayiku Mensah commented.
Others suggested expanding the celebration to include other traditional attire such as kente, describing it as a “Fugu and kente affair.”
Another comment referenced a recent regional social media debate, calling for an invitation to a Zambian national whose remarks had earlier triggered discussions about Ghanaian dress and identity.
“And also extend an invitation to the Zambian who started this conversation,” Victor Kobla Hoewornu Tamakloe commented.
