The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory urging Ghanaian nationals in Mexico to exercise extreme caution following escalating security concerns in parts of the country.
The advisory, released after recent developments in Mexico, follows an operation by Mexican security forces on Saturday, February 22, 2026, which reportedly resulted in the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The unrest has been characterized by armed clashes, arson attacks on vehicles, and road blockades, leading to casualties and significant disruptions to daily life.
According to the Ministry, the incident has triggered coordinated retaliatory attacks across several Mexican states include Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Oaxaca.
The Ministry advised Ghanaians travelling to or residing in these areas to limit movement and refrain from non-essential travel until the situation stabilizes.
Ghanaian citizens in Mexico have also been encouraged to maintain communication with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico, for any necessary consular assistance.
The Embassy has provided a hotline for emergencies: +1 (202) 709 0568.
The Government of Ghana expressed solidarity with the Government of the United Mexican States and conveyed confidence in the ability of Mexican authorities to restore order.
