The Minister for Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has revealed that out of the 500,000 young Ghanaians who applied to join the country’s security services, only 5,000 recruitment slots are available.
Addressing the media on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the minister said that the government implemented a strategic mechanism to manage the overwhelming number of applicants and ensure fairness in the selection process.
According to him, the pass mark was initially fixed at fifty (50) percent; however, due to the large number of candidates who passed, it was subsequently increased to sixty-five (65) percent.
“Can we do the pass mark at 50%, so that many more people can go for medicals, because the end game is that we will only absorb 5,000, so if you do that, are you fair to the average Ghanaian?”
“And in order not to shorten… innocent young people, it’s better you put in a mechanism that will reduce the number drastically,” the minister revealed.
He added that despite the adjustment, about 105,000 applicants were still qualified for medicals.
He further assured the public that the government remains committed to ensuring that all qualified applicants will be given equal opportunity in another phase.
