Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea was attacked by armed robbers on its return from a Matchday 29 game against FC Samartex in Samreboi.
According to sources, the incident happened at Ahyiresu on the Bibiani-Goaso road.
In a statement, the affected club confirmed the unfortunate incident with a detailed account:
“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage.
“Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”
The club revealed that one player sustained serious injuries and has been hospitalised.
“Unfortunately one of our players is badly injured and is receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital waiting to be transferred to the regional hospital.”
Berekum Chelsea expressed gratitude to those who came to their aid.
“We are grateful to the police patrol team for its rapid response, sports journalists who quickly disseminated the information, the town of Ashiresu which provided temporary shelter for our players, and officials of Bibiani Gold Stars who have offered tremendous support.”
The statement also acknowledged the support of the Ghana Football Association and assures the public of updates and wishing their injured player a speedy recovery:
“We will update the general public as developments unfold and wish our player God’s speed in his recovery.”
