Leader of the Union Government (UG) movement, Akwasi Adai Odike, has called on government to prioritize local contractors in the construction of interchanges across the country.
Speaking on Angel TV morning show on Monday, April 13, 2026, he stated that Ghanaian contractors have the capacity to execute such projects but are often sidelined in favor of foreign firms, particularly Chinese companies.
“It is time we give local contractors the opportunity to build interchanges, Papa, take your mind there. We can do it, and do it better, we should not be giving our money to Chinese,” he said.

Odike further claimed that many sectors of the economy are increasingly dominated by Chinese businesses, leaving local entrepreneurs struggling.
“When we go to the ministries, you will find many Chinese taking contracts while Ghanaians are home, looking at them. Most businesses in this country are gradually being taken over,” he revealed.
He also raised concerns about the retail sector, noting that foreign traders are directly competing with local businesses.
“Women who used to import diapers from Dubai, Chinese traders bring the products directly and retail them here. They are driving many Ghanaians out of business,” he stated.
Odike emphasized the need to strengthen the private sector, arguing that sustainable national development depends largely on empowering local businesses rather than relying on foreign investors.
