The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has visited Jimi Land and the Jimi River in Obuasi to inspect areas severely devastated by illegal mining.
The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to address the devastating effects of illegal mining and to promote the reclamation of degraded lands and the rehabilitation of polluted rivercourses.
During the tour on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the Asantehene inspected various sites ravaged by illegal miners to assess first-hand the extent of environmental destruction and the urgent need for restoration.
The inspection is linked to the Jimi Land Reclamation and Rivercourse Rehabilitation Project, an initiative aimed at restoring lands and water bodies damaged by illegal mining activities and contributing to environmental sustainability in the area.
The project seeks to reclaim degraded farmlands, rehabilitate the Jimi Rivercourse, and restore livelihoods for communities affected by galamsey.
Otumfuo’s visit underscores the critical role of traditional authorities in the fight against illegal mining and highlights the need for collective action by government agencies, mining stakeholders and local communities to combat the menace and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
The tour of Jimi Land and the Jimi River reinforces the call to reclaim degraded lands and restore water bodies to safeguard the environment for present and future generations.
