The Constitutional Review Committee has proposed extending the presidential term of office from four years to five years, as part of recommendations aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring policy continuity.
The Chairman of the committee, Prof. Prempeh, disclosed this Monday, December 22, 2025, when the committee formally presented its work to the President at the Jubilee House.
According to Prof. Prempeh, the proposal is intended to create a more stable governance framework by allowing presidents adequate time to design, implement, and consolidate long-term national policies without the constant pressure of frequent election cycles.
Prof. Prempeh emphasised that the proposal does not undermine democratic accountability, noting that it is anchored in strengthening institutions, enhancing checks and balances, and promoting efficiency in public administration.
President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Constitutional Review Committee for its integrity and non-partisan work.
He described the recommendations as “timely and necessary” to safeguard Ghana’s democratic future.
Speaking at the presentation of the committee’s abridged report, the President said the committee was deliberately selected to command public trust and avoid the political disagreements that stalled previous constitutional review efforts.
