Tension flared at the Assin South polling centre during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries after a group of delegates allegedly assaulted an agent of presidential aspirant Dr Bryan Acheampong over claims of financial impropriety.
The agent is accused of withholding part of the funds reportedly meant for the delegates.
According to sources, a total amount exceeding GH¢120,000 was allegedly allocated for 703 delegates, with each expected to receive GH¢700.
However, the agent reportedly distributed GH¢500 per delegate, allegedly retaining GH¢200 per person.
The situation escalated after delegates claimed the agent had handed the withheld funds to his girlfriend, who allegedly fled the area.
Upon learning of this, some delegates reportedly attacked the agent and threatened to boycott the voting process until the outstanding amounts were paid.
Security personnel later intervened to restore calm at the centre.
