Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a decision to double the monthly allowance of its street sweepers, increasing the stipend from GH₵400 to GH₵800.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, February 7, 2026 Mayor of Accra, Micheal Nii Kpakpo noted that move is aimed at ensuring greater youth participation in economic opportunities while helping to reduce the unemployment rate nationwide
“We are increasing their salaries from GHC 400 to GHC 800, which will bring more people to join them to do the work. I think it’s a good thing and will help bring the unemployment rate down,” he noted
According to the him, unemployment among some youth is often linked to low pay rather than a lack of willingness to work.
He also commended the introduction of the government’s 24-hour economy policy, saying it will create more opportunities and provide an enabling environment for young people seeking jobs in the country.
“When you are a leader, and you want people to work well, you need to make sure the salaries they take home are fair. We thank God His Excellency John Mahama has introduced the 24-Hour Economy, which is helping AMA operate 24/7,” the Mayor stated.
