The leadership of the Tijaniya Muslims Movement of Ghana has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and Parliament to ensure the immediate passage and assent of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
In a statement on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the TMMG national secretariat called on President Mahama to uphold his campaign promise from the 2024 campaign season, in which he assured religious and traditional leaders of his dedication to Ghana’s culture and moral values.
The group advised him to “stand unshakeable in those convictions,” adding that “leadership is a covenant with people and the protection of our traditional family structure is at the heart of that covenant.”
Under the certificate of emergency, the statement noted that numerous administrative bills have been passed, often within a short period of time.
“We have observed Parliament pass numerous fiscal and administrative bills under a Certificate of Emergency, sometimes within a mere 24 hours.
We argued that there is no greater emergency than the potential erosion of our society’s moral foundation,” part of the statement read.
Tijaniya leadership stressed that the country’s laws must reflect the collective conscience and cultural identity of its citizens, emphasizing the need for Parliament to treat the bill with greater attention.
“We urge the House to treat this Bill with the same legislative vigor and urgency.
“For the Ghanaian people, the LGBTQ+ issue is not merely a legal debate: it is a matter of national survival and spiritual integrity. Anything that touches the moral fibre of our society must be treated as a primary concern. Our laws must reflect the collective conscience of the people we serve,” the group highlighted.
The group further urged high authorities to preserve Ghana’s moral fibre and uphold the traditional values, reminding them of the divine weight of words.
In alignment with our diverse religious heritage, we remind our leaders of the divine weight of their words. As the Holy Qur’an instructs:
‘And fulfill every covenant, for every covenant will be questioned (on the Day of Judgment)’ 17:34.
“Promises made to the people regarding our traditions, religion, and the unity of our society are not just political statements; they are solemn oaths before God,” the leadership of Tijaniya declared.
