President John Dramani Mahama has indicated the country has saved GH₵19 million following his decision to scale down Ghana’s 2025 Independence Day celebrations.
The stateman disclosed that his office received an estimated amount worth GH₵20 million while budgeting for the event.
However, he noted, deemed it prudent to take a meaningful decision to protect the public purse from its current crisis, hence, the scaled-down to hold the event at the forecourt of the Jubilee House.
“The state spent GH₵15 million on last year’s celebration in Koforidua and GH₵13 million on the previous year in Ho. This year, we received an estimate of at least GH₵20 million for holding the event at the Independence Square on the same scale as the the previous years,” he said in his address.
According to the President, the decision forms part of broader efforts to demonstrate fiscal responsibility amid Ghana’s ongoing economic crisis.
“In a year when we are calling on all to sacrifice including workers who have accepted the base pay adjustment far below the rate of inflation, it is unconscionable to spend that kind of money on a few hours of celebration,” he added.
He reiterated on the decision and stated that the year’s celebration have saved the country 95% of the estimated cost of the event.
