Former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has refuted claims that she participated in the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North with ill intentions.

In her first public remarks since the incident on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Madam Koomson recounted the events leading up to the confrontation, asserting that she complied fully with police directives at the polling centre.

“I was at the voting centre with my security, but the police insisted I enter alone, saying unauthorised persons were not allowed in so I obliged and left my security guys outside,” she said.

The former lawmaker said that chaos erupted when a group of men entered the station, identifying two of them as affiliates of the opposition party.

“As soon as the thugs entered, I identified two NDC guys from Kasoa. One of them shouted, ‘Where is Hawa Koomson?’ and they just pounced on me.

“So, the claims that I went there with ill intentions and carried pepper spray for that purpose are unfounded, I did not go there to cause trouble,” she stated on UTV.

Drawing a connection between the attack and past threats to her family, the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East suggested the incident was politically motivated.

“My son was stabbed during the voter registration exercise, so I know I’m a target for the NDC. When I saw the thugs walking toward me holding knives, I acted in self-defence,” she stressed justifying her usage of the pepper spray.
