Akwatia by-election: Sentiment, ghost won’t win – Madhi Gibrill to NPP

Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madhi Gibrill, has entreated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus on real voter engagement rather than relying on emotions ahead of the Akwatia by-elections.

Mr. Gibrill criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its campaign approach ahead of the September 2, 2025, elections.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) he counselled the NPP that “sentiment and ghosts don’t win elections.”

His comment was in reaction to claims that the NPP is appealing to the emotions of voters by using the death of their former Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi as a basis for winning sympathy votes.

According to him, such tactics are misplaced, as elections should be based on performance and development, not sentiments.

“If you say your MP has died so the people should vote for you, then you are wrong. That is not how democracy works,” he asserted on Tuesday, August 5.

Mahdi further highlighted that the NDC has initiated several development projects in the Akwatia constituency, and he urged residents to consider those achievements when casting their votes early next month.
