Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has entreated his former Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to exhibit a high standard of purpose and clarity now that he has become the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader.
He added that Dr. Bawumia should lead with decisiveness and a heartfelt commitment to the party fraternity.
Akufo-Addo gave the charge on Saturday, January 31, 2026, after the latter was elected as the NPP’s leader at its recent presidential election.
“To our Presidential Candidate: lead with a big heart. Lead with decisiveness. Lead with clarity of purpose. Lead with all of us behind you. Stretch out your hand to all who stood in this race,” said at the NPP’s headquarters in Accra.
Akufo-Addo said the opposition party’s singular goal is returning to power in the next general elections; therefore, it calls for putting aside internal differences.
“With the flagbearer chosen, let us end the era of factions. From constituency to region to national office, our purpose is singular: elect officers who will serve the Party’s interest, support our Candidate, and help secure victory in 2028. Nothing more. Nothing less,” added the former statesman.
He hinted that for the next two years before the country goes to the polls, the NPP has the longest runway to prepare, thus the need to make good use of the period.
Akufo-Addo shares the view that 2026 should be for “healing wounds, reorganising our structures, and strengthening our parliamentary frontline.”
He emphasised this point, explaining that especially when the party held primaries to elect parliamentary candidates in constituencies where it does not have Members of Parliament (MPs).
He continued, “Every week must count. Every constituency must be involved. Every organiser must be empowered. And, every communicator must speak with confidence.”
Akufo-Addo advocated for unity, togetherness, and renewed belief in the NPP’s mission by freeing the energies of the people, rewarding hard work, upholding the rule of law, and building a Ghana where every child can dream and every citizen can develop.
“The journey to 2028 begins tonight. With unity as our strength and service as our compass, we shall prevail again, move forward, stronger, together and more hopeful than ever.”
