SIM-Card re-registration is a waste of taxpayers money: exercise in futility – Krobea

The deputy communication director of New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has described the upcoming SIM-card re-registration overseen by Communications Minister Sam George as a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Speaking on Anopa Bofo on Angel FM on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, he emphasised that the exercise started on grounds of lies hence the minister should give clear explanation on why Ghanaians are required to re-register their SIM cards.

He noted that the minister initially told the public that there would be no cost to consumers, but later announced that it would cost GHC 5 per person to register via mobile phone.

He recalled that Mr George had earlier said all telecommunications companies would bear the financial responsibility for the registration and that the government would not incur any cost yet he is later telling what the government is supposed to do noting that involves finance the government will bear as well.

He added that the exercise would be an additional burden on people who would have to queue to register their SIM cards.

“First of all it is an unnecessary stress he is giving Ghanaians, the first time he made announcement of it he said it will come under no cost to the final consumer today when we woke up they said it will cost us GHC 5 to register, so I am saying that all these exercise started on grounds of lies,” he stated.

Mr Krobea Asante argued that the minister is doing a disservice to his office by pursuing the exercise without addressing wider telecommunications problems, such as lack of internet connections in some areas that affects people’s ability to make calls.

He asserted that the minister must disclose the database left by the previous administration, explain its status and clarify what will be added so that Ghanaians understand and accept the re-registration.

“Has he been able to chronologically tell that this is the data he met, we want to add this, this is going to be the benefit Ghanaians are going to have? He has not engaged Ghanaians in that conversation all he is doing is propaganda.

“Forgetting he would need the input of Ghanaians to make it a success, so until Sam George tell us the truth, me I see this exercise as a complete waste of everybody’s time,” he stated.
