Government to complete 35 Agenda 111 hospitals – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that government will complete 35 Agenda 111 hospital projects that are at advanced stages of completion, as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery across the country.

He said the decision forms part of a broader review of the flagship healthcare infrastructure programme, which has faced delays and implementation challenges since its launch.

Addressing the Northern Regional House of Chiefs at the Presidency on Friday, 15 May 2026, President Mahama noted that while the Agenda 111 initiative was ambitious, the approach of starting all 111 hospitals at once was not ideal.

“With the Agenda 111 hospitals, I don’t think it was a very prudent idea to start 111 hospitals at the same time. At least they should have been phased,” he said.

He explained that some of the projects were left at foundation level after contractors received mobilisation funds but failed to proceed to site, adding that accountability measures are being pursued in such cases.

“Some at foundation level, people took the mobilisation and never went to site,” he stated.

The President indicated that government’s immediate priority is to ensure that 35 hospitals that are near completion are fully funded and completed within the year.

“Government this year is going to put money in and continue them and complete them,” he said.

He further disclosed that additional funding will be provided in subsequent budgets to complete another batch of hospitals under the programme.

According to him, government is also exploring partnerships with faith-based organisations and private sector operators to adopt and manage some of the facilities that can be completed for operation.

“We’re also inviting faith-based organisations that run hospitals to adopt some of the hospitals that they think they can complete and operate,” he noted.

President Mahama emphasised that the goal is to ensure efficient completion and utilisation of health infrastructure to improve access to healthcare services across the country.

He added that government is also investing in complementary health infrastructure, including new specialist facilities such as cardiac centres, to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide.

The Agenda 111 programme was launched to expand access to healthcare by constructing district hospitals, regional hospitals, and specialist facilities across Ghana.
