The Ayawaso West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Michael Mensah, has assured the public that the Villagio apartment remains safe and structurally sound after parts of the building collapsed on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Speaking on Thursday, October 22, Dr Mensah said the building went through all the necessary permitting processes to support its height and is not at risk of collapse.
He said the Assembly, together with the Engineering Council, has inspected the building and found nothing wrong with the structure.
“We were there with the Engineering Council and there’s nothing wrong with the building,” he stated.
Dr Mensah explained that the increasing value of land has made vertical construction necessary, especially in affluent areas, but developers are required to follow strict procedures to guarantee structural integrity.
He said the area where the blocks fell had already been cordoned off and restricted, and no one was present there when the incident happened.
“There’s hoarding around the building so that place was actually restricted. Where the blocks landed was restricted so there was nobody there to be affected,” he said.
He added that recommendations have been made for concrete to be allowed to cure properly up to one metre before construction continues, and for safety nets to be installed around the building.
“Up to one meter, allow the concrete to cure properly before they continue. And we’ve also indicated that there should be safety net around the building, especially around that side so that it will prevent further falling of the blocks,” he explained.
According to him, the absence of safety nets at the affected section was due to the presence of a hoist and supporting pillars, but measures have been put in place to address it.
Dr Mensah urged the public to remain calm and go about their normal activities without fear.
