The Bono East Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Suleman Mohammed-Mustapha, has said the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to seek the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the presidential term limit will be fruitless, arguing that the Constitution is clear on the matter.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Thursday, October 29, on Angel FM’s ‘Anopa Bofo’, Mr Mohammed-Mustapha said President John Dramani Mahama had repeatedly indicated that he would not seek another term after completing his current four-year mandate.
“We have questioned His Excellency John Dramani Mahama severely if he wants to go for another term and he said no. When he finishes the years ahead of him, then he rests”, he said.
According to him, the President has consistently maintained that he would leave office after serving his current term.
Mr Mohammed-Mustapha further argued that persons appointed by President Mahama to engage the Supreme Court on the Ghana Presidential Term Limit issue had affirmed that the constitutional provision allows a president to serve a maximum of two terms.
He questioned why the NPP, which he said had consistently maintained that it understood the law, would seek the Supreme Court’s interpretation on an issue he believes is already clear.
“The NPPs claim they know the law so why are they taking the issue to Supreme Court for advice, when we all know the rules and laws?”
He also criticised the NPP’s approach to opposition politics, describing the party as a bad opposition and accusing it of making arguments that do not make sense.
Mr Mohammed-Mustapha maintained that the Constitution was clear on presidential term limits and argued that the NPP’s decision to seek the court’s advice amounted to a waste of Ghanaians’ time.
