Limiting the number of SC Justices will lead to unnecessary case loads – Sophia Akuffo

Former Chief Justice of the Ghanaian Judiciary, Sophia Akuffo, has expressed her disagreement with former President Nana Akufo-Addo, regarding the constitution’s suitability and lack of flaws.

In an interview on Joy News on Tuesday, December 7, 2024, she stated that a constitution is a living document that must be nurtured, tweeted, massaged, and periodically reviewed to determine whether it still serves the reasons for which it was created.

According to her, there is nothing wrong with examining or updating a constitution to ensure that each section serves the purposes of the people.

The former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, declares she completely agrees with President Mahama that the constitution should be reviewed.

“I am fully in agreement with President Mahama that there should be a review of the constitution,” she said.

In her remarks, she claimed that the constitution review process began around a decade ago, and while it is regrettable that the process has been delayed, “we need to take another look at it”, she said.

After 33 years of implementing our constitution, the former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, emphasises that we must acknowledge that some of its provisions are not functioning as intended.
