President John Dramani Mahama has urged the senior Female National team of Ghana, Black Queens, to build on their recent success and win the Women’s African Cup of Nations trophy before he leaves office in 2028.

He gave the charge after receiving the team at the Presidency on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, following their impressive performance in the recently ended WAFCON in Morocco, where they won a bronze medal.

President Mahama and his Vice

Addressing the Queen’s entourage, President Mahama stated that;

“The Vice President Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang and myself, we are happy to receive you. We followed your game very keenly, especially Nana Jane, she was your chief supporter. Your style of play was, I mean, fantastic.

“It was just unfortunate that you came up against the host nation at a very critical time, and they were determined to win, you know, whatever happened. And playing against a home team, especially the host team, is not the easiest of things, but you held them throughout.”

He stressed “It was only the penalties that let us down. So all is not lost yet. Your best days are still ahead of you,” he said.

The President hinted that his government will create a sports fund that will ensure proper funding of sports in the country.

“We’ll work to get dedicated funding for sports so that the issue of financing and teams traveling and getting their per diems and all that will be a thing of the past,” he assured.

He expressed his administration’s appreciation to the team and was confident they would bring home the ultimate in subsequent WAFCON tournaments before he leaves office.

“So on behalf of myself and Jane, I want to congratulate you, thank you for the good job you did. We’ll keep watching your progress and I’m sure that in the not too distant future we’ll come with something more worthy than bronze, maybe silver or even maybe gold.

“I’m an optimist, I know I’ll see you here before I leave office as President, you’ll come to this Jubilee House with a gold medal,” he said to applause from the players and officials.
