The Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Dr. Francis-Xavier Sosu (Esq), has reached a significant milestone in his academic and professional journey after being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law by the University of Ghana (UG).

The two-term lawmaker and trained legal practitioner received the degree on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, marking the culmination of years of rigorous academic research and scholarship.

Dr. Sosu’s academic record reflects a long-standing relationship with the University of Ghana. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Oil and Gas Law from the institution.

Additionally, he earned an MPhil from the University of Education, Winneba, and successfully defended his PhD thesis in late 2025.

Beyond academia, his legal career has also continued to advance. In August 2025, he was appointed a Notary Public by the Supreme Court of Ghana, following his nomination by the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

Speaking after his graduation, Dr. Sosu explained that his doctoral research focused on international economic law, with particular emphasis on regional integration in Africa.

His work introduces a new conceptual framework he calls the AFRICORN 63 Model, designed to support Africa’s economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

According to him, the goal of the research is not merely academic recognition, but real-world impact.

“I’m hoping that this work will not end up as one of those studies that just sit on shelves, but one that can influence policy and help Africa integrate economically,” he said.

He expressed deep appreciation to the University of Ghana and his supervisors for their guidance, singling out Professor Echia, Dr. Aziz Bamba, Dr. Appiah, Dr. Atupari, and Professor Atupari for their dedication throughout the process.

Dr. Sosu encouraged the youth to embrace education and continuous self-development, regardless of their circumstances.

“There is no limit to what we can do. The world is changing fast, and you cannot hold on to just one thing. Even as a sitting Member of Parliament, I must find time to study, research, and read to expand my scope.”

He stressed that education remains the most powerful tool for personal and societal transformation, noting that his own life is a testament to that truth.

“If I recount my story, from coming from the streets and begging to eat, to standing here today, it shows how education can change a life. Irrespective of your background or who your parents are, you can change your story.”

He urged young people not to be discouraged by systemic challenges or lack of support.

“If no one is helping you, help yourself. Rise up and do something for yourself. Everyone can change their destiny using education as a tool.”
