The Tesano Divisional Police Command has secured a 20-year prison sentence with hard labour for an 87-year-old man convicted of defiling a nine-year-old girl at Ofankor, a suburb of Accra.
The convict, identified as Yaw Gahornu, was sentenced by the Gender-Based Violence Court at the DOVVSU Headquarters after he was found guilty of defilement.
According to a statement issued by the Accra Regional Police Command and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, preliminary investigations revealed that on August 29, 2026, the mother of the victim returned from work and noticed bloodstains on her daughter’s clothing.
Upon questioning, the nine-year-old disclosed that the accused had allegedly subjected her to repeated sexual abuse between July and August 2026.
Police investigations further established that the suspect allegedly lured the child to his sleeping quarters and threatened to kill her if she told her mother about the abuse.
The incident came to light on August 31, after the act was reportedly witnessed by the accused person’s granddaughter, who informed family members. The matter was subsequently reported to the police.
Yaw Gahornu was arrested, charged, and arraigned before the court, which convicted and sentenced him accordingly.
Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Command has welcomed the conviction and reiterated its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons.
The Command is urging the public to promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to the police for investigation and appropriate action.
