The Minister of Health, Dr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has urged contractors working on the La General Hospital project to accelerate construction ahead of its scheduled commissioning in January 2028.
The €50 million project includes the provision and installation of medical equipment.
He acknowledged the significant progress made on the project but challenged the contractors to speed up work, given the facility’s importance to the large population it is expected to serve.
“We can speed up so that we can beat the deadline,” the minister said during an on-site inspection on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Dr. Akandoh also called for a review of the proposed emergency department’s capacity to ensure it meets the hospital’s needs and helps address challenges with emergency bed availability.
The minister pledged continued monitoring of the project until the facility is completed and operational.
He dismissed payment delays as an excuse for slow progress, stressing that the government had been paying contractors on time.
He noted that the latest interim payment certificate had been submitted and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance.
