Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, has emerged as a frontrunner to reclaim the seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and is said to be favoured by former Member of Parliament (MP), Andy Appiah-Kubi, to take up the mantle.
Appiah-Kubi, who lost the seat in the 2024 general elections to Kwame Frimpong contesting as an independent candidate, remains an influential figure in the constituency and is said to favour Bempah Bonsu to win back the seat for the party.
The development comes at a time when political activities have intensified in Asante Akyem North as the incumbent MP, Kwame Frimpong, is facing criminal prosecution outside the country, though Parliament is yet to officially declare it vacant.
Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu is positioning himself for a possible by-election, with his focus firmly on the 2028 parliamentary elections.
The former Head of Corporate Affairs of Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC), is hopeful that NPP delegates will select him in 2027 to represent the party on its ticket going into the 2028 general elections.
Campaigning on the theme “Bold and decisive Leadership: Building a strong future together”, Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu says the NPP needs a winnable and marketable candidate with grassroots appeal to reclaim the seat that was snatched from the party in 2024.
He points to his popularity, political experience and developmental contributions in the constituency as what sets him apart from other potential aspirants.
“I remained loyal and stood by Mr Appiah-Kubi at a time when other parliamentary aspirants contested against him,” he told Angelonline.com.gh, describing his loyalty and long-standing relationship with the former MP as key credentials.
He is expected to face other aspirants when the party opens nominations.
