The Chief of Nsuta Atonsu, Nana Danso Abiam, has cautioned teachers against engaging in sexual relationships with their students, warning that offenders will face consequences if reported.
Speaking in an interview with Angel News, Nana Danso Abiam said he was uncertain whether some teachers initiate intimate relationships with students or whether students approach teachers, but stressed that neither situation should be encouraged.
He said since he became Chief, he has been visiting schools within the community to advise teachers against engaging in sexual activities with students.
“What I have been doing since I became the Chief of Nsuta is going round schools in the community and advising teachers to refrain from having sexual relationships with students,” he said.
According to him, teachers who are interested in each other and wish to settle down in marriage can approach him for support in seeking the necessary traditional arrangements.
He, however, warned that any teacher found engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a student would not be spared if the matter came to his attention.
“You cannot be a shepherd and be eating your sheep,” he said.
Nana Danso Abiam further stressed that teachers have a responsibility to protect the students entrusted to their care, particularly after going through years of education and training to become professionals.
He emphasized that such conduct violates Ghana’s laws and traditional values, adding that offenders could be summoned by government authorities and traditional leaders to face the consequences of their actions.
The Chief further urged teachers to desist from secret affairs with students, warning that such relationships undermine the country’s education system and leave a negative legacy for future generations.
“Teachers should refrain from any unlawful act to avoid having issues with the law and government,” he stated.
He also encouraged students to be careful in their interactions with teachers and pleaded with teachers to remain focused on their professional responsibilities to ensure that students also concentrate on their academic work.
