Deputy Director-General of the Narcotic Control Commission (NACOC), Alexander Twum Barimah Esq., has stated that the cultivation of cannabis, which has been much anticipated, will be legalized in Ghana in March 2026.
Speaking on “Anopa Bofo”, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, he noted that, the cannabis legalisation is for industrial and medicinal purposes.
“From March going, we will start legalizing cannabis, it is being legalised for industrial and medicinal purposes,” he stressed.

According to him, cannabis is used for clothes, teabags, and medicines for epilepsy, referencing Morocco as a country who uses cannabis to prepare medicines to cure cancer and epilepsy.
“I went to Morocco two weeks ago and i saw companies using it for medicines to cure cancer, and epilepsy,”
Mr. Twum stressed that, it would be licensed and strictly regulated to the extent that farmers would be given Identification cards with barcodes that contain their details.
“We will give a license to everyone who would plant it, and it will be strictly regulated to the extent that the farmers would be given IDs, the IDs would be barcoded so that when it’s scanned it should prove your details,” he noted.
He warned farmers, to be wise because they will not spare anybody who will breach the rules.
” Listen carefully, because we will not spare anybody who will breach the rules when it comes to that legalisation part,” he advised.
He further highlighted the different kind of licenses that would be given to the farmers to prevent them from later smuggling the plant out to UK, and US.
“And we won’t say grow it and later give it to someone to smuggle it to UK, US whatever, because we have different license, export license, Import license, Transport license, Brooding license, Cultivating license, Laboratory license, so many,” he said.
