Government to support security services with GH¢1 billion retooling package

Must Read

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GH₵1 billion investment aimed at upgrading the equipment and logistics of Ghana’s security services to enhance their performance and working conditions.

Speaking at a gathering with security personnel the Presidency, President Mahama acknowledged the difficulties officers face and emphasized the government’s commitment to providing the needed resources.

“I know you work under difficult circumstances, and we’ve actually been discussing with the Minister of Interior how we can retool your services so that you have the equipment and logistics to be able to do your work,” he said. “We had a National Security Council meeting this afternoon, and I managed to squeeze the Minister of Finance’s hand behind his back, and we’ll get a budget of a billion cedis for retooling of your various services.”

He highlighted the Ghana National Fire Service as one of the agencies in urgent need of new equipment, noting that it has been nearly ten years since the last major supply of fire tenders.

“Fire Service needs fire equipment urgently. Let me say I empathize with my sister here. When the Fire Service arrives late, people get angry. But they just don’t have the fire tenders. The last set of fire tenders were bought almost 9 or 10 years ago during Prof. Mills’ time. There’s not been a retooling. Most of those tenders are broken down.”

He also addressed the growing threat of violent crimes such as armed robbery and acknowledged the difficulties the Ghana Police Service encounters in tackling these issues.
