Former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong-Fosu has entered the NDC National Chairmanship race, bringing decades of governance and political experience to the contest.
he veteran politician and governance expert, who has served Ghana across different political and administrative eras, is seeking to take charge of the party’s national leadership as the NDC prepares to strengthen its structures and consolidate its position ahead of future elections.
Opong-Fosu, a founding member of the NDC, has built a political career spanning more than four decades, beginning with his appointment as District Secretary under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) administration in 1982.
During his early years in public service, he played a role in Ghana’s decentralisation process, contributing to the development of systems that later evolved into the current Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly framework.
His experience includes serving as Head of the Local Government Service, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Member of Parliament for Amenfi East.
Opong-Fosu is also recognised internationally for his leadership in local governance and institutional development. He previously served as President of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-Africa), Vice-President of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), and Chairman of the ACP Local Government Platform in Brussels.
His supporters are expected to highlight his record in public sector reform, decentralisation, environmental governance, investment promotion and international diplomacy as evidence of his capacity to provide strategic leadership for the NDC.
In presenting his leadership vision, Opong-Fosu has emphasised the need for stronger institutions, accountable leadership, unity and a renewed commitment to the values that underpin the party.
His leadership philosophy is captured in his message: “Restoring Values. Renewing Mindsets. Resetting Ghana.”
