Ghanaian broadcaster, Serwaa Amihere, has urged young women to be mindful of how they present themselves, warning that their appearance and digital footprints can influence how others perceive them.
Speaking at IGNITE’s “The Complete Ignite Woman” session on Sunday, October 25, she advised young women against rushing to acquire expensive designer items, particularly fake luxury bags and clothing, to impress others.
“You know what you’re wearing is not gold. It’s copper but you pack it plenty like Akabenezer. Why? It’s very offensive”, she said.
According to her, people should learn to appreciate their current circumstances and work towards acquiring the things they desire rather than feeling pressured to keep up with others.
She explained that items which may appear expensive today could become affordable to them in the future as their financial circumstances improve.
“All the things that you’re wishing for, you’ll get it one day, don’t rush it,” she said, recounting how there was a time she could not afford the shoes she now wears.
Serwaa Amihere further cautioned against purchasing counterfeit designer products, particularly bags made to imitate luxury brands such as Birkin and Louis Vuitton.
She questioned the decision to carry fake designer items into professional settings, noting that such choices could influence the impressions people form about an individual.
“You’re walking into an office, then you’re holding a fake Birkin, and immediately I know it’s either you don’t know what you’re carrying or you’re want me to think you’re carrying an actual Birkin”, she stated.
She, however, encouraged young women to explore affordable alternatives, pointing to brands such as Zara, Aldo and Primark, which offer stylish bags at different price points.
The broadcaster also recommended Kantamanto Market as an option for those seeking fashionable and affordable clothing.
She disclosed that she had previously visited the market as early as 4 a.m. to purchase items when traders were opening newly arrived bales.
“We use to go there. Early 4am, you leave the house. That’s when they’re opening the bale fresh. You get nice exclusive clothes. Even when you wear it, nobody will know it”, she stated.
According to her, shopping early could provide access to unique pieces that allow individuals to dress well without necessarily spending large sums of money.
While encouraging the mentees to be patient as they work towards their fashion and lifestyle aspirations, Serwaa Amihere stressed that how people present themselves can shape the opinions others form about them.
“But remember, how you present yourself will have people form an opinion about you”, she said.
