Ghanaian actress Yvonne Okoro has criticised Ghanaians for what she describes as a lack of support for locally produced movies.
She says many people quickly dismiss Ghanaian films while celebrating foreign productions.
Speaking during a discussion, monitored by Angelonline on Sunday, October 25, 2026, titled “Ghana’s film industry: What’s Changing and What’s Next?” the actress said Ghanaians often perceive local productions as substandard without giving them a fair chance.
“We do not support our own. Everything Ghanaian, we see it as substandard,” she said.
According to her, some audiences readily enjoy poorly produced Hollywood movies and Nigerian YouTube content but become overly critical when similar shortcomings are found in Ghanaian films. Adding that people often question the quality of local movies before watching them.
“‘Will the movie be nice?’ You’re watching horrible movies. I’m sorry to say even some Hollywood movies are horrible. You’re watching and clapping. You’re watching some of the YouTube videos from my people in Nigeria and you think it’s fantastic”, she stated.
Yvonne Okoro further expressed concern that even when filmmakers produce quality content, audiences often claim they were unaware of the movies, despite the promotional efforts made by the producers.
She questioned why people continue to overlook locally produced films even after filmmakers have spent considerable time and resources marketing their projects.
“I’ve been marketing for how long, you didn’t know this movie was there?” she said.
The actress maintained that the lack of audience support remains a challenge for Ghana’s film industry, particularly when local filmmakers struggle to attract viewers despite their efforts to promote their work.
